Why the NIE fee is not €12
Almost every English-language guide gives €12 as the cost of a NIE. The official table gives €9.84 for assigning a NIE at the applicant's request. €12 is the fee for an EU registration certificate — a different procedure, on a different form, for different people. The two got conflated somewhere and have been copied between guides ever since.
The difference is small in money and large in what it tells you about how carefully the rest of those pages were written.
